The Setting
Serenus Academy of Magic
Location: Calor Island, middle of the northern region of the Pacific Ocean. Accessible to boats only.
Climate: Changes rather drastically from season to season, going from being freezing in the winter and sweltering hot in the summer. Tends to remain rather damp all year around.
Layout: The main building is located just to the east of the front gate, taking up a considerable amount of land. Directly behind it is the dormitory, and to the west of that is the arena. Surrounding the arena is the track, and just behind it is the field. Trees, flowers, and even a pond can be found on the campus grounds, but there isn't an actual garden. Dirt paths wind their way around the campus, going from building to building. The grounds themselves are blocked off by a massive, iron-wrought fence that prevents students from getting out, and others from getting in.
Technology: While an emphasis is being placed on using physical resources such as books and pen and paper, the school has acknowledged that it is necessary for students to learn how to use to computers in this day and age. Computers can be found in the library or in one of the two labs. Cellphones can be used on school grounds, but must remain turned off and out of sight during class. Modern kitchen appliances, like fridges and ovens are used as well. Other than that, however, the school relies primarily on magic to keep things working (like using torches and lanterns for light sources).
Classes: Students are required to take courses in magic, as well as ones in science, math, and English in order to make it easier for them to integrate back into society. Other courses offered include visual arts, business, physical education, music, and so on. Essentially, if a regular high school would offer the course, then the academy will too. A table of magic-related courses can be found below. Please keep in mind that each grade level has it's own class, even though both may be called the same thing. For example, the Basic Elements class would have separate classes for first and second years.
Year | Elemental Magic | Summoning Magic | Healing Magic | Transformation Magic |
First Year | Basic Elements 01 (study of manipulating fire, water, earth, and air. Mainly theory, and practising forms, with some practical application). | Basic Summoning 01 (mainly theory involving summoning and summoning techniques). | Basic Potions 01, Basic Healing Magic 01, Basic Botany 01 (study of potions, healing magic itself, and plants used in healing. Mainly theory with healing magic and botany, and potions is half and half). | Basic Transformation 01 (theory of transforming oneself and other objects into something else) |
Second Year | Basic Elements 02 (extension of Basic Elements class with more emphasis on actually trying the techniques and theories). | Basic Summoning 02 (continuation of the above year, although students get to interact with actual spirits summoned by the teacher) | Basic Potions 02, Basic Healing Magic 02, Basic Botany 02 (extension of the previous year). | Basic Transformation 02 (continuation of the above, and actually modifying small inanimate objects). |
Third Year | Branches of Elements 01 (roughly half theory regarding branch elements, and half actual practice). | Summoning Spirits 01 (starts to get into actually summoning spirits, using companion and less-dangerous spirits. Still a lot of focus on theory). | Potions 01, Healing Magic 01, Botany 01 (more in-depth theory work with magic, more hands-on with botany and potions) | Transformation 01 (more modifying the environment, more theory about changing oneself) |
Fourth Year | Branches of Elements 02 (extension of third year's class. Similar methods). | Summoning Spirits 02 (continuation of the previous year, but with more emphasis on actually summoning things). | Advanced Spirit Summoning 02 (continuation of fifth year). | Transformation 02 (modifying the environment and changing forms for a short period of time) |
Fifth Year | Advanced Core Elements 01 (mainly theory and practising forms concerning the advanced core elements). | Advanced Spirit Summoning 01 (the start of summoning more dangerous and more powerful spirits. Students also are permitted to purchase their own stones from here on out). | Advanced Potions 01, Beginner Healing 01, Advanced Botany 02 (applying previous knowledge to heal small cuts, bruises, common colds, etc.) | Advanced Transformation 01 (staying in a different form for longer periods of time, theory concerning changing one part of the body) |
Sixth Year | Advanced Core Elements 02 (focuses more on putting the things learned in the previous year to practice). | Advanced Spirit Summoning 02 (continuation of fifth year). | Advanced Potions 02, Beginner Healing 02, Advanced Botany 02 (applying previous knowledge to heal larger wounds and more intense illnesses, but still not serious ones) | Advanced Transformation 02 (continuation of the previous year) |
Seventh Year | Mastering the Elements 01(focuses on refining techniques learned in previous years, as well as going more in-depth with theory and other such things). | Mastering Spirit Summoning 01 (delving more in-depth to summoning). | Advance Healing 01 (application of everything learned in previous years, putting all the courses together to heal serious injuries and sicknesses) | Mastering Transformation 01 (practising changing only one part of the body) |
Eighth Year | Mastering the Elements 02 (a continuation of the previous year) | Mastering Spirit Summoning 02 (continuation of seventh year). | Advance Healing 02 (a continuation of the previous year). | Mastering Transformation 02 (continuation of the previous year) |
